President Biden plans to run for reelection in 2024, according to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
Fox News’ Peter Doocy brought the question to the attention of Jean-Pierre at the daily White House press briefing on Monday. These concerns, brought up by bipartisan strategists, largely revolve around Biden’s age, which would be 82 at the start of his second term and 86 by the end of it.
“First of all, let’s reset for a second,” Jean-Pierre responded. “I cannot talk about elections. I cannot be a political analyst from here or, you know, or the midterms or anything like that or including 2024. The president, as you know, has been asked that question many times, and he has answered it,” she added. “His answer has been pretty simple, which is, yes, he’s running for reelection. I can’t say more than that.”
These comments come only two days after David Axelrod, chief strategist for former president Barack Obama, and considered a heavyweight in political analysis, expressed significant concern with Biden’s plan to run.
“The presidency is a monstrously taxing job and the stark reality is the president would be closer to 90 than 80 at the end of a second term, and that would be a major issue,” Axelrod told the New York Times.
President Biden’s still-declining approval rating is yet another point of concern for the democratic party. He already faces scrutiny for his numerous blunders while delivering speeches and addresses. Some members of the party, such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who have been vocal in their support of President Biden, have been vague on whether or not they plan to vote for him in 2024.
“You know, if the president chooses to run again in 2024, I mean, first of all, I’m focused on winning this majority right now and preserving a majority this year in 2022,” Ocasio-Cortez told CNN. “So, we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it … I think if the president has a vision and that’s something certainly we’re all willing to entertain and examine when the time comes.”
When pushed by CNN host Dana Bash for a more definite answer, Ocasio-Cortez replied, “I believe that the president has been doing a very good job so far. And, you know, should he run again? I think that I… you know, I think it’s … we’ll take a look at it.”
