On Tuesday, the White House dodged questions about a voice mail left by President Biden for his son Hunter, discussing his business dealings overseas.
The White House maintained its stance that anything related to Hunter Biden’s laptop would not be discussed, as more information comes out that calls into question Biden’s claims on the campaign trail in 2020. President Biden has firmly and repeatedly denied involvement and knowledge of his son’s business ventures, claiming that Hunter never divulged any information to him.
“Hey pal, it’s Dad. It’s 8:15 on Wednesday night. If you have a chance, give me a call. Nothing urgent—I just wanted to talk with you,” Biden said in the 2018 voice mail. “I thought the article released online, it’s going to be printed tomorrow in the Times, was good. I think you’re clear.”
The article in question was a New York Times article about a 2017 meeting between Hunter Biden and Ye Jianming, the chairman of Chinese energy company CEFC, which is now defunct. The meeting was reportedly about a potential partnership with CEFC, Joe Biden and Jim Biden, the brother of the current president.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked why there was a voice mail of Biden speaking to his son about his business dealings if the president’s repeated claim that he had never spoken to his son about his business ventures is true.
“Well, first, I’ll say that what the president said stands,” Jean-Pierre said. “So, if he, if that’s what the president said, that, that is what stands.”
Jean-Pierre refused to answer any further questions from that point, responding, “I’m not going to talk about alleged materials on the laptop” to multiple follow-up questions.
The response comes after images have surfaced from the laptop that show Biden next to several prominent officials, such as Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim. The image is dated from November 2015.
Biden’s administration and others in his camp have attempted to cast the laptop and its contents into the realm of disinformation, acting as though they are false and entirely meant to discredit President Biden.
However, intelligence officials have made it clear that the laptop is anything but. They have stated as far back as October 2020 that the laptop and its contents are genuine and not part of any disinformation campaign.
Hunter has been under investigation for his “tax affairs” since 2018. It was first reported in December 2020 that he was the subject of a Grand Jury investigation. The investigation is ongoing.
