United States President Joe Biden has been taking heat for his remarks comparing people who do not support his party’s voting legislation to historical racists. He again painted his political opponents with his broad brush of racism at a speech he delivered in Georgia. Fox News reporter Peter Doocy put his feet to the fire when he asked White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki about it.
In a Friday press briefing at the White House, Doocy asked Psaki about the apparent discrepancy between Biden’s campaign words and his presidential words. “[A]s he talked about a year ago and working with Republicans, now he is talking about Republicans that don’t agree with voting rights,” Doocy said. “He’s describing them as George Wallace, Bull Connor, and Jefferson Davis. What happened to the guy who — when he was elected — said, ‘To make progress, we must stop treating our opponents as our enemy’?”
Radio host Clay Buck posted a video clip on his Twitter account where Doocy’s question is recorded verbatim.
The White House transcript initially scrubbed Biden’s disparaging comparison from the official record, which was captured by an archived snapshot of the originally posted transcript. The record was set straight at some later point, presumably after the omission had been pillorized by Conservative media who noticed the omission. The revised transcript does include Doocy’s complete question, which includes the references to Bull Connor, George Wallace, and Jefferson Davis.
“I think everybody listening to that speech who is ‘speaking on the level’ — as my mother would say — would note that he was not comparing them as humans,” Psaki replied. “He was comparing the choice to those figures in history and where they’re going to position themselves if they — as they determine whether they’re going to support the fundamental right to vote or not.”
