On the heels of an NBC report that President Joe Biden is “furious” that his statements are constantly being walked back by his handlers, on Tuesday White House officials were forced to walk back another controversial comment by the beleaguered President.
On Monday, Biden appeared to suggest that the U.S. should adopt new restrictions on handguns — explicitly calling out the 9mm pistol, the most popular handgun in America.
“They said a .22-caliber bullet will lodge in the lung,” said Biden, “and we can probably get it out — may be able to get it and save the life. But a 9mm bullet blows the lung out of the body.”
Biden continued: “So the idea of these high-caliber weapons is, uh, there’s simply no rational basis for it in terms of thinking about self-protection.”
Many believe Biden’s clear implication is that 9mm pistols should be considered a “high-caliber weapon” and banned.
Biden did not mention that 9mm pistols are not characterized as a “high-caliber weapon” by most gun experts.
On Monday, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced new gun legislation, giving Canada some of the strictest gun laws in the world.
Noteworthy is that nations such as Canada and Australia, which are at the top of the list for imposing COVID-related restrictions, also feel compelled to enforce restrictions on gun ownership.
Earlier this week Biden said, “I can’t outlaw a weapon. I can’t, you know, change the background checks. I can’t do that.” However, gun-rights advocates took President Biden’s comments on handguns as an attempt to jump on the gun-ban bandwagon that Trudeau, Nancy Pelosi, Beto O’Rourke, and Chuck Schumer are pushing.
However, seeing that millions of Americans do not support a gun ban and the midterms are in jeopardy, the White House once again walked back the President’s comments.
On Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that President Biden does not support a “Canada-style ban on handgun sales.
“We’ll leave it up to other countries to set their policy on gun ownership,” Jean-Pierre said at a briefing. “The President has made his position clear: The United States needs to act. As I just laid out, he supports a ban on the sale of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and expanded background checks to keep guns out of the — dangerous hands.”
During the briefing, Fox News’ Peter Doocy asked: “Canada is making it impossible to buy, sell, transfer, or import handguns anywhere in that country. Would President Biden ever consider a similar restriction on handguns here?”
Jean-Pierre replied, “He does not support a ban on the sale of all handguns.”
A CNN report noted: “Democrats … are expressing cautious optimism and looking for a [gun ban] deal following the recent elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas — suggesting that this might be the tragedy that breaks a decades-long stranglehold on new gun legislation.”
