Speculation has been flying around about the possibility of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis running for office in 2024, and while he has kept a tight lip on any certainty of a presidential ticket, former President Donald Trump has commented on a potential reelection run and discussed DeSantis in the process.
In an interview with Newsmax, Trump talked about seeing DeSantis run, even possibly taking him on as his vice presidential pick.
“Well, I get along with him,” Trump said, confirming the two still have a strong relationship, adding, “I was very responsible for his success, because I endorsed him and he went up like a rocket ship.”
Trump then said that his family has expressed a willingness to support him should he run for a second term.
“Well, they love our country, and they hate to see what’s happening,” Trump said. “Barron’s a young man, and Melania is a first lady who is really loved…they love our country, so I think they’ll do what has to be done if we decide to go that way.”

DeSantis was endorsed by former President Trump for the office of Florida governor in 2017, adding to his growing popularity. DeSantis became a popular figure for Republicans after his response to the COVID-19 pandemic where he refused to enforce mask or vaccine mandates and kept businesses open in Florida. He gained further popularity by supporting the Parental Rights and Education bill, otherwise known as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which he eventually signed into law.
These actions, as well as others, have made him a prime candidate for the presidency, as he has garnered support among Republicans and moderates alike.
Elon Musk recently came out in support of DeSantis for 2024. Musk, who voted Republican for the first time in his life in the election of Mayra Flores, said that he was considering voting Republican for 2024, leaning towards DeSantis should the governor run.
Podcaster Joe Rogan also came out in support of DeSantis on Tuesday. “I think Ron DeSantis would work as a good president,” Rogan said. “I mean, what he’s done for Florida has been admirable.”
A recent poll placed DeSantis two points ahead of former President Trump among Republican voters.
