On Sunday the Republican former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich appeared on “Sunday Morning Futures,” and said that the members of the January 6 House Select Committee “face a real risk of jail” if the GOP takes back the House and Senate in the 2022 midterms.
“You have — both with Attorney General [Merrick] Garland and with this select committee on January 6, people who have run amok,” he said.
“They are breaking the rules. They are going after people in a way that is reminiscent of the British monarchy using closed-door systems that we outlawed deliberately because we had seen it. We knew what it was like. They are running over peoples’ civil liberties,” he said.
The former Speaker said that the committee is “literally just running over the law” and “pursuing innocent people,” saying that the committee is “basically a lynch mob” and that the Attorney General is “misusing the FBI.”
“What they need to understand is on January 4 next year, you’re going to have a Republican majority in the House, and a Republican majority in the Senate,” Gingrich predicted Sunday, adding “all these people who have been so tough and so mean and so nasty are gonna be delivered subpoenas for every document, every conversation, every tweet, every email,” he said.
“I think when you have a Republican Congress, this is all going to come crashing down, and the wolves are going to find out that they’re now sheep,” the former Speaker said. “And they’re the ones who are, in fact, going to, I think, face a real risk of jail for the kind of laws they’re breaking.”
Watch:
This interview followed an op-ed Gingrich penned days ago for Newsweek in which he gave a similar warning.
The January 6 Select Committee is in the process of potentially bankrupting scores of Americans who worked for or supported President Trump. They face financial ruin defending themselves against the committee’s attack. The legal costs of fighting subpoenas and the further cost of legal counsel if put under oath by a hostile congressional committee creates a real burden. That financial burden is compounded by the psychological stress of being under assault by the House Democrats—and potentially also the FBI.
House Republicans owe it to the Constitution and the American people to defeat the wolves and return them to sheep status.
This is not about revenge. This is about reinforcing the principle that in America, political wolves who viciously destroy their fellow Americans—and violate the rule of law to do so—will not be tolerated. This is about restoring the core principles of American self-government.
First, House Leader Kevin McCarthy and his leadership team should send a letter to every member of the Select Committee, the staff of that committee, the staff of House administration and the staff of Speaker Nancy Pelosi. This letter should warn them that they must keep all emails, notes, records of all meetings and communications, so that on January 4, 2023, they can all be reviewed by the new Select Committee on Congressional Dishonesty and Abuse of Power.
