First Lady Jill Biden was greeted by vocal bystanders when she made a stop in Connecticut to assess learning outcomes.

She travelled with Education Secretary Miguel Cardona Wednesday to New Haven, Connecticut, according to the Daily Wire report. After the First Lady exited their SUV, a bystander yelled, “Your husband is the worst president we’ve ever had.”

“Thank you,” Mrs. Biden yelled back at him, as she waved in his direction with a big smile on her face. “Thank you for your support.”

Secretary Cardona could be seen smiling, also, in a video of the exchange posted to Twitter.

“You owe us gas money,” the male bystander yelled in response.

“Thank you,” the First Lady repeated, with another big smile, as she entered a downtown building.

The irate man was probably referring to the large runup in energy prices over the last year or two.

Gasoline prices jumped 59.9 percent during the 12 months that ended in June, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The price motorists pay at the pump has dropped about $0.50 in the last month, but the average cost per gallon in the U.S. is still more than $4.50, according to the automotive service group AAA. Diesel prices still average almost $5.50 per gallon.

Even though gas prices have dipped a little over the last month, some observers are afraid it is a temporary reprieve due to citywide lockdowns in Chinese cities restricting demand. Once China lifts COVID-19 lockdowns, China’s economic engine is expected to roar back to life, adding a lot of demand to that side of the supply and demand equation.

Also, European sanctions will begin banning oil shipped from Russia in a few months as part of their latest round of sanctions designed to punish Putin for invading Ukraine. There is some worry that Russia will just cap their wells in response that could raise the price of crude oil from its current level — around $100 per barrel — to more than $200 per barrel.

That could possibly cause gas prices in the U.S. to jump to more than $6 per gallon just before the midterm election.
