Footage of the Times Square shooting on Saturday, when three innocent bystanders were shot, including a four-year-old girl, shows a heroic female member of the NYPD running through the chaos that erupted, carrying the little girl in her arms to safety.
The little girl, Skye Martinez of Brooklyn, who was toy shopping with her family, was shot in the leg. A 23-year-old tourist from Rhode Island who came to visit the Statue of Liberty but traveled to Times Square when she realized the Statue was closed was also shot in the leg, and a 43-year-old women from New Jersey was shot in the foot. Skye Martinez underwent surgery on Saturday night at Bellevue Hospital Center.
The officer who saved the girl, Alyssa Vogel, offered words of comfort Sunday to Skye Martinez’s mother — a day after the woman watched her baby take a bullet to the leg.
“I kept telling her to breathe, that I know what she’s going through because I have a baby myself,” said Vogel. “It was very difficult for her, very traumatic. She saw her daughter just get shot.”
Vogel, a former school teacher who joined the NYPD four-and-a-half years ago, also said the tiny shooting victim was “the strongest little girl I’ve ever seen.”
“Keep your head up,” Vogel told The Post when asked if she had a message for the injured tot’s mom. “The little girl’s going to be able to walk again. She’ll be OK.”
NYPD Deputy Commissioner John Miller tweeted, “Whether [officers are] rushing toward the danger to help save a little girl or rushing home to family after their tour this #MothersDay — the dedication of NY’s Finest knows no bounds.”
“Police say two to four men got into a dispute of some kind … NYPD detectives and a K9 unit sifted through trash cans overnight, recovering clothing that match those worn by a person of interest,” CBS New York reported.
The Rhode Island woman, Wendy Magrinat, 23, was shot in the thigh. She told the New York Post, “I just covered it and ran a little, just to get my daughter and my family to safety — but I couldn’t. The pain was too much, and I dropped to the floor.”
“I felt really dizzy, and I was losing blood, and I just started screaming, ‘I got shot! I got shot! I don’t want to die!’” Magrinat said, recalling she screamed, “I have a 2-year-old, please get my daughter to safety! I have a 2-year-old — I don’t wanna die!”
“I was screaming … ‘Please help me!’ — and people were just recording, they weren’t helping,” Magrinat claimed, adding, “I understand … people get in shock. But if you’re in shock, you shouldn’t be recording. But that’s how people are right now.”
“Police did not recover a gun at the scene, but three shell casings from a .25 caliber were found on West 45th Street,” PIX 11 reported.
The New York Post reported on Sunday that a suspect has been identified in the shooting and that he was reportedly attempting to shoot his brother when the three bystanders were shot. “Farrakhan Muhammad, a 31-year-old CD peddler, was identified as the alleged shooter in Saturday’s horror,” the Post reported, adding, “Two sergeants with the Manhattan South Detective Bureau were then working a fatal overnight stabbing at a West 31st Street single-room-occupancy hotel when they spotted a man who looked almost identical to the alleged shooter, even down to his clothes, hanging around, sources said.”
