Aaron Rodgers, iconic quarterback of the Green Bay Packers, took some time following his team’s Sunday win over the Chicago Bears to discuss a number of topics on “The Pat McAfee Show.”
First and foremost was Rodgers’ viral trash-talk moment after scrambling for a game-clinching touchdown in the fourth quarter and hollering at Bears’ fans in the stands, “All my f***ing life, I own you!”
He added, “I still own you! I still own you!”
But as the chat moved toward subjects such as what’s deemed acceptable behavior and the extent to which fans and players should be allowed to express themselves, Rodgers dug deep into our “woke, PC culture.”
“There’s a PC, woke culture that exists,” he observed. “And there’s a cancel culture at the same time, and it’s based on people’s own feelings of maybe personal [misery] or distaste for their own situations or life or just the enjoyment of holding other people down underneath their thumb.”
Rodgers continued by laying out the ton of time and effort others spend talking about and writing about every bit of minutia in his life — and manufacturing controversies along the way, not unlike what many other professional athletes endure, as they’re as much celebrities these days as Hollywood movie stars.
But the veteran quarterback said he’s learned how to rise above it all.
“There’s a game within the game, right?” Rodgers explained. “And in this game, there’s a player, and there’s a game. And if the player abides by the rules of the game, he’s a part of the game.”
He noted that this attitude extends to fan behavior — and his behavior toward fans, such as his “I still own you!” exclamation.
“Are we getting that soft as a society that we can’t have a back and forth now?” Rodgers wondered.
But Rodgers said he’s “not a victim” — and then went after the woke generation.
“There is this culture that exists that gets off, I think, on shrinking people, keeping them small, keeping them in a box, quieting them through [cancellation] or demeaning comments,” he said.
“I also exist outside of that, in a different realm where I do feel confident in the things that I say, and I do stand behind what I do, and I like to speak the truth, and I’m not a part of this woke, cancel culture that gets off on trying to silence people all the time.”
