Vaccine hesitancy is emboldened and tempers flare when government officials are inconsistent in their messaging. The Post Millennial notes that Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) put fuel on the fires of discontent by presenting contradictory information regarding COVID-19 vaccines on Fox News and CNN on the same day.
Sounding like a Republican, Mace told Jason Chaffetz, host of Fox’s “Sunday Morning Futures”: “In some studies that I’ve read, natural immunity gives you 27 times more protection against future COVID infection than a vaccination. And so we need to take all of the science into account and not selectively choosing [sic] what science to follow when we are making policy decisions.”
In that interview, Mace advocated for natural immunity, saying, “One of the things that the CDC has not done and no policy at the federal level has done is taken into account what natural immunity does, and that may be what we’re seeing in Florida today.”
Mace was referencing reports that Florida now boasts the lowest COVID rate in the country, despite having lax restrictions.
However, in an interview with CNN later that day, Mace said she was “a proponent of vaccinations and wearing masks.”
Watch:
Mace also encouraged those who have previously tested positive for COVID-19 to be vaccinated. The Huffington Post supports that recommendation, citing a CDC study which, the Post admits, was prone to error:
“One limitation of the study,” the Post article reads, “is that the pool of people who had been infected with COVID-19 and who also had been vaccinated was relatively small.”
MSN notes that “many viewers took to social media to attack Mace” for her apparent pandering to different demographic groups.
MSN referenced a Twitter post in which Joseph Sakran, a surgeon at Johns Hopkins, referred to Mace’s comments as “reckless”.
Dr. Sakran posted to Twitter: “As a critical care surgeon, let’s just be clear about how wrong and reckless Nancy Mace is. This is one of the many reasons I’m supporting Annie Andrews, a trusted healthcare professional who will tell you the truth, and make us proud walking the halls of Congress.”
Other Twitter users were quick to criticize Mace’s appearances:
Compartmentalizing politician forgets people have access to both channels. https://t.co/ZzBZOwLiiT
