While on air, Fox News host Jesse Watters questioned Sen. Lindsey Graham’s (R-SC) timing in proposing a bill that would ban abortion nationwide after 15 weeks.
In the tense exchange, Watters pressed Graham to respond to the Republicans who are “angry” at him for giving Democrats an “out” while they are faced with still-struggling inflation numbers.
Graham told Watters that he has no apology and said that he refuses to sit by while the United States takes a stance on abortion, that is, in his view, as extreme as that of China and North Korea.
“No one is saying you need to sit on the sidelines, but yesterday wasn’t the day to do that. Yesterday was the day they lost all momentum when this inflation thing punched them right in the face, and you gave them an out,” Watters shot back.
“A lot of people don’t like that,” he added. “You could have done it on any other day, just like you could have delayed the whole press conference — like Joe should have delayed that stupid party.” Watters said, referring to the event President Joe Biden held on the White House South Lawn on Tuesday, celebrating the passage of the much touted, and largely ineffective, Inflation Reduction Act.
On Tuesday, Graham unveiled the Protecting Pain-Capable Unborn Children from Late-Term Abortions Act, a bill which would enact a sweeping ban on abortions at a national level after the first 15 weeks. Exceptions would only be made for rape, incest and the life of the mother. The announcement came after the Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed that inflation, which came at an 8.3% annual rate in August, was higher than expected, damaging the narrative that the Inflation Reduction Act would be the inflation killer.
Graham stressed “I don’t think there’s a bad day to stand up for the unborn,” taking issue with Watters’ stance on timing, before shouting, “I am not going to apologize!”
Watters noted that polling showed that many Americans support restrictions on abortion past the first trimester, but still argued that the senator possessed “terrible” timing and tactics.
