NYC Mayor Eric Adams chastised a dad who took him to task over ongoing facemask rules for under 5s, saying: ‘Don’t yell, you’ll send the wrong message to your kids.’
Adams was filmed scolding the unnamed dad outside the Pig n’ Whistle pub in Midtown Manhattan as he celebrated St Patrick’s Day in the Big Apple.
‘Talk to me, don’t yell. You send the wrong message to your daughter,’ Adams said, scolding the father. ‘I got this. They’ll be unmasked.’
He did not say when that would happen. The dad, whose initial outburst was not caught on camera, then responded politely to Adams thanking him for answering.
Adams visit to the pub was marred by multiple parents demanding to know when their young children would be allowed to remove the face coverings they must still wear at school.
They must continue to wear the face coverings because COVID vaccines haven’t been approved for under-5’s, even though youngsters have been shown to be at extremely low risk from serious COVID infections.
‘I would love to hear from you,’ one says back to him.
‘I’m a dad too,’ he said.
Kubak, who has a three-year-old daughter and a four-year-old son, said she wanted to remind him that his 26-year-old son doesn’t have to wear a mask.
But he walked away before she had a chance.
‘I find that’s very condescending because, as a mother of toddlers, I’m asking a very valid question,’ she said.
Her son, who moved to New York from Brussels, suffers from a language related phobia, called selective mutism, where he’s unable to speak in certain social situation.
His native language is French and she fears that the constant masking will permanently inhibit him from learning English because masks muffle and cover the mouth, preventing him from hearing and seeing words being pronounced.
‘I don’t know why he thinks he knows what parents of forced-masked children are going through. Not sleeping, worrying how much harm two-year masking will have on his kid’s speech,’ she said.
The World Health Organizations recommends against using face covering for children five and under because they rarely fit and kids don’t wear them properly.
Scientific data suggests that kids this young are at an extremely low risk for contracting Covid-19 and if they do it is rarely lethal.
‘He’s refusing to sit down with us and give us the reason [to keep the mandate]’ she said.
