During a Friday interview with Fox News’ Tucker Carlson, Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-FLa., doubled down on his decision to strip Disney of its self-governing and tax benefit privileges.
DeSantis signed new legislation on Friday, revoking Disney’s ability to regulate its taxes, land use, environmental and medical services.
During the interview, DeSantis noted that the new legislation was appropriate because Disney had abused its privileges and abandoned its mission to support families and children.
DeSantis explained: “This company had a deal unlike any company or individual in all of the state of Florida, probably anywhere in the United States. They were self-governing, they had extraordinary powers, they could build nuclear power plants, they didn’t have to go through permitting processes and obviously a lot of tax benefits. And that’s just inappropriate.”
DeSantis continued: “And it’s certainly inappropriate when you look… they pledged themselves to mobilize their considerable corporate resources out of the coffers of this Burbank, California, based corporation to overturn the rights of parents in the state of Florida –- effectively commandeer our democratic process.”
However, Disney’s unique financial or business privileges did not seem to be the deciding factor for DeSantis as he pointed to leaked video showing the president of the corporation, Karey Burke, expressing her desire to push LGTBQIA+ content into future programming aimed at children.
Tucker Carlson said it is ironic that Disney executives speak of the importance of defending democracy when they stand against the democratic legislative process.
DeSantis replied by saying: “I think what the left has come to is they want to see power exercised in advance of their leftist agenda. So yes, they used to be hostile to big corporations because they perceived corporations as being apolitical and that they wouldn’t support their agenda.”
The governor continued: “Now they’ve figured out that they can try to subcontract out their leftism out of some of these big corporations and some of the executives will cave to the woke mob and then they’ll basically do the left’s dirty work.”
DeSantis also said that prominent Democrats believed Disney’s opposition to the “Parental Rights in Education” bill would convince him to back down and not move the bill forward.
Disney’s protests seemed to embolden others: Hollywood followed their lead, as did the White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, but those outrageous slings and arrows only emboldened DeSantis, who asserts, “We’re [not] gonna back down an inch.”
Referring to the Democrat progressive agenda, DeSantis told Carlson, “The majority of Floridians do not want woke garbage in American society, including biological men competing in women’s sports and have their children have sexual orientation jammed down their throats.”
