Conservative news commentator Candance Owens ridiculed USA Today’s decision to highlight President Joe Biden’s transgender Assistant Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine as among its nominees for 2022 Women of the Year.
Owens’ comments were made on Tuesday’s episode of Tucker Carlson Tonight. Carlson opened the segment by noting that in the early days of the COVID pandemic, Levine, then a health official in Pennsylvania, “forced nursing homes to take in COVID-positive patients, even as Levine snuck [her own] mother into a private facility.”
After pointing out that the USA Today’s Woman of the Year award should be awarded to a woman, Tucker noted that the nomination of a transgender man appears to be a “major win for the patriarchy.” He then introduced his guest by saying, “Candace Owens is a woman, so we thought she could assess [what’s going on].”
Owens responded: “What’s a woman? I’m confused. I don’t know what a woman is anymore. [What USA Today has done is] pointedly ridiculous.”
Owens charged that what some believe are progressive steps forward are in reality, regressive steps back:
“It gets back to what I always say about progressives which is that they’re always so progressive that they actually just regressive, right? It’s the same with feminism. With early feminism, we were trying to create a space for women that was separate from men. We wanted women sports and for them to compete differently.”
Speaking of how the acceptance of transgender athletes have negatively impacted women’s sports, Owens said:
“We have women that train all the way from the time that they’re kids up through college to try to compete against other women. Now you can throw on a wig and say ‘Actually, I am a woman too’ and you can crush all of their records because it is so progressive it is actually regressive!”
Watch:

USA Today announced their nominees for Woman of the Year on Sunday. Other nominees include Vice President Kamala Harris and Melinda Gates, the former wife of Microsoft founder Bill Gates.
Candace lamented the lack of virtuous nominees saying of the progressive trend: “We are actually erasing women and sadly, it was a feminist that got behind this early on and didn’t have the courage to say ‘no, that’s a man we are looking at!’ and feminists should be fighting this tooth and nail.”
Owens then called upon women from both sides of the political spectrum to speak up on this important issue.
“Where is Hillary Clinton?” Owens asked. “Where is the person who ran on ‘women are so oppressed and I’m a woman and vote for me because I am a woman?’ She seems suspiciously quiet on this topic and doesn’t want to touch this topic about men taking the spots of women. So it is ridiculous.”
Owens then pointed to the left’s nefarious agenda:
“It is always about disrupting the family unit. The government gains more power when people are confused. If you know whether you’re a woman or a man you’re not going to have a functional nuclear family. Instead, you will have a dysfunctional family. Dysfunctional people tend to rely upon the government. That is what is happening right now and that is what you are seeing the push for.”
Owens continued: “I feel that is absolutely ridiculous to say that a man can be a woman and a woman can be a man. Why don’t we just pick our races as well? That is a question that trans people never want to answer. Of course, you can’t pick your race and of course, you can’t pick your race or gender.”
“You are born the way you are. Of course, we’re talking in reality and the left does not work in reality.”
The Daily Mail noted that Levine, 64, is the first openly transgender four-star officer in the Uniformed Services and the first female four-star admiral.
Levine served as Secretary of Health in Pennsylvania from 2017 to 2021 before serving as Asst. Secretary of Health for the Biden Administration.
