“We are aware of a social media video that appears to show an altercation that preceded the shooting,” said Chief of Police Katherine Lester in the statement. She added investigators are trying to figure out what, if any, relation these events may have to the shooting. She asked bystanders who took photos or videos that might help detectives investigating the shooting to submit them online or use the SPD’s QR code to upload images and videos.
Chief Lester explained in her statement that Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators have responded to the scene and are conducting a comprehensive investigation; gathering evidence, documenting the scene and contacting involved individuals.
“During the preliminary phases of the investigation, at least one firearm has been recovered at the scene,” Lester noted.
The police chief informed reporters at the scene there were no suspects in custody, according to a report in “The Sacramento Bee”. She added it wasn’t immediately clear if the victims were deliberately targeted, or even how many shooters were involved.
The Bee report added members of victim families gathered around the two-block by four-block cordoned-off section of streets; the reportedly said the shooting genesis was fights that had broken out as bars and clubs were letting out for the night.
