An event in Alabama where former President Trump was scheduled to appear as a keynote speaker has been reportedly canceled over political concerns.
The event: Trump was reportedly expected to speak in Mobile, Alabama at the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park. The event was slated to take place on July 3, one day before Independence Day.
Why was it canceled? USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park commission became concerned that instead of celebrating Independence Day, the event will be political, according to a statement its chairman, Bill Tunnell made to NBC News affiliate WMTV.
“After the request was made, then there was contact with the Republican Party, they contacted us and then it became apparent that it was going to be a partisan political event, rather than just a patriotic event planned for that evening,” the commission chairman told the outlet.
Tunnell explained that the commission reached out to the attorney general in the state, Steve Marshall, asking for a formal opinion on the matter. WMTV reports that, according to Marshall’s response, which was sent on June 16, the letter from the commission was dated May 26, postmarked June 1, and the attorney general’s office did not receive it until June 14.
Marshall wrote in his letter that the office does not have enough time to offer an official opinion but pointed to laws that allow parks to be used for political events if they are “available for all political parties and candidates on an equal basis.”
Worth noting: Tunnell suggested that the last time the part was used to hold a political event was in 2012 for Rick Santorum’s rally.
“Rick Santorum was the, was the straw that broke the camel’s back. And that’s when the commission went to the no partisan politics open to the public,” said Tunnell.
The Alabama GOP Party’s chairman, John Wahl, said that the former president planned to attend the event and was excited to speak there. Trump is disappointed that the event was canceled, he said.
