Comedy Central host Trevor Noah poked fun at President Joe Biden and journalists attending Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Association event.
President Biden began the event with a few jokes before Noah began his keynote address.
“Republicans seem to support one fella,” Biden began, “some guy named Brandon. He’s having a really good year, and I’m kind of happy for him.”
“Now you get to roast the President of the United States,” Biden said, adding, “and, unlike in Moscow, you won’t go to jail.”
Noah poked fun at the audience of mostly journalists covering Washington but made some funny jabs at the president.
The comedian noted journalistic careers have been hurt by the Biden presidency, pointing first to Daniel Dale. He joked that Dale used to be the star fact-checker for CNN on TV every day, but now there is barely anything to check, Noah said. He lumped The Washington Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler in that group.
“On the way here, I saw him on the street offering four pinocchios for a dollar,” Noah said about Kessler. “Mr. President, that’s on you.”
Then, it was the president’s turn to be roasted.
“You know, I was a little confused about why me, but then I was told that you get your highest approval ratings when a biracial African guy is standing next to you,” jabbed Noah.
Later he touched on the rising cost of living.
“People have been so hard on you, which I don’t get, I really don’t,” the comedian said. “You know, I think ever since you’ve come into office, things are really looking up. You know — gas is up, rent is up, food is up. Everything.”
He joked the first lady continues to teach while the Bidens are in the White House because she still has a large student loan debt to pay off. Then, he touched on the ineffectiveness of the administration.
“You know, last month he caused a huge international incident saying that Vladimir Putin should be removed from power,” the comedian teased the president. “It was very, very upsetting to Russia — until someone explained to them that none of the stuff Biden wants actually gets done.”
Noah had a joke about White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki’s career plans.
“Congratulations to Jen on your big career change,” he said about Psaki. “But you know, moving to MSNBC is gonna be a big switch up for you because, right now your current job is to make the Biden administration look as good as possible, you know, at all costs. Now you’re gonna be at MSNBC and you’re gonna have to … um … you’ll be fine actually.”
He observed that current times must be the “golden era” of conspiracy theories. “Whether it’s the right-wing believing Trump can still win the 2020 election or the left believing Joe Biden can still win the 2024 election,” he said.
“Please be careful leaving here, tonight,” the comedian concluded. “We all know this administration doesn’t handle evacuations well.”
