In a situation some are calling too little too late, a Baltimore post office delivered blank mail-in ballots to several dozens citizens — ballots for the 2020 election.
The Daily Wire reported that the post office discovered the “tray” of undelivered ballots on August 5 of this year. The ballots were reportedly delivered the next day, August 6.
The post office confirmed that in early August, employees “discovered” 26 blank, undelivered election ballots for the 2020 election.
USPS spokesperson Tom Ouellette told WMAR-2 News:
“We deeply regret the late delivery of these mailpieces. The Postal Service takes these issues very seriously and is working to help avoid issues like this by going over our processes and procedures with all employees ahead of the general elections.”
The Daily Wire reports that the ballots were mailed from the Baltimore City Board of Election to addresses having a Baltimore zip code.
The USPS statement concluded:
“The U.S. Postal Service is fully committed to the secure, timely delivery of the nation’s Election Mail. We are in close communication with the Baltimore City Election Board and look forward to a successful election in November.”
Nick Frisone, one of the Baltimore residents who received his requested ballot almost two years late, shared with WMAR-2 News that he “knew his ballot had gone missing September 29, 2020,” after receiving an Informed Delivery email noting his ballot would be delivered that day, but never arrived.
“And then it just never came,” Frisone explained, “so then I had to call the Board of Elections and then I had to go in-person to get a replacement.”
It’s unclear how many of the 26 citizens who did not receive their ballots similarly requested replacements.
Baltimore City Election Director Armstead Jones announced that the Maryland State Board of Elections will address the issue.
Jones noted that the situation is unusual.
“Individual pieces can be lost, having a tray lost is a little different story. Jones said. It has to be sitting somewhere around somebody and somebody needs to look and see what it is.”
Jones added: “It would’ve been nice if they could’ve contacted us, so the voters wouldn’t have been confused.”
The integrity of mail-in voting has been questioned after significant irregularities were reported during the 2020 election.
Though some election reform initiatives have enjoyed bipartisan support, Republicans have led in pushing for an overhaul of ballot casting protocols to ensure that votes are properly received and counted in the coming 2022 and 2024 elections.
