A man identifying as a transgender woman was removed from New Jersey’s women’s prison last month after impregnating two women.
Demi Minor, 27, is serving a 30-year sentence for manslaughter. He was moved to a prison for young adult offenders in Burlington County last month, according to Department of Corrections spokesman Dan Sperrazza.
According to the DOC spokesman, Minor is eligible for parole in 2037.
The transfer to Garden State Youth Correctional Facility from the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women followed revelations by NJ.com of Minor getting two Edna Mahan prisoners pregnant. The news outlet said the pregnancies resulted from “consensual sexual relationships.”
State corrections officials were criticized after the news was released because of allegations that COs sexually abused and exploited female prisoners for years.
It apparently caused the state to review its transgender prisoner policy of housing transgender prisoners based on the gender they identify with. That policy, enacted under a 2021 settlement agreement with the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey that required it be followed for at least one year, ended last month.
An ACLU lawyer praised last year’s settlement agreement, saying at the time it was something New Jersey could be proud of. It is unlikely the attorney expected the policy to result in pregnant women prisoners.
Sperrazza reportedly said the DOC moved Minor to the vulnerable unit at his current prison, adding he could not comment on the DOC’s specific housing actions in Minor’s case because of policies around privacy.
A July 5 post on Minor’s website claims corrections officers forcibly removed him from Edna Mahan and beat him during the transfer to his current prison, the nj.com report noted.
“NJDOC cannot comment on any active investigations,” a statement issued by the department read. “The Department has zero tolerance for abuse, and the safety and security of the incarcerated population and staff are of critical importance.”
