Three Americans died at an exclusive Bahamas resort Friday and another was transported to a hospital, Bahamas authorities have said.
Police at the Georgetown police station were notified around 9 p.m. Friday by a Sandals Emerald Bay resort employee about an unresponsive man. “Officers were dispatched and while enroute to the scene they were informed that an additional male and female were found unresponsive in another villa,” police said in a statement. Responding officers checked on the first man and reported finding an unresponsive White man lying on the ground. Authorities reported that an exam of the man, who was later pronounced dead by a local doctor, found no evidence of foul play.
When they checked on the next villa, Royal Bahamas police reported finding an unresponsive White man slumped against a bathroom wall and an unresponsive White woman lying on a bed.
“Both individuals showed signs of convulsion,” police reported, adding officers found no evidence of trauma during their exams of the couple. A local doctor later pronounced them dead, too, police said.
“Our initial investigations revealed that the couple found in the second villa complained of illness the previous evening. They attended the local medical facility and on completion of receiving treatment, they returned to their lodging.”
Police said they are waiting on autopsy results to determine their exact cause(s) of death.
Minister of Tourism and Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper said, “Another American woman has been airlifted to Princess Margaret Hospital.”
Sandals Emerald Bay includes 500 acres of manicured gardens adjoining a milelong stretch of unspoiled beach on the island of Great Exuma. Villas at the remote resort rent for more than $4,000 per night and guests have access to three pools, 11 restaurants and an award-winning golf course.
