Parents, lawmakers, and advocacy groups have amped up pressure on the Biden Administration and Justice Department.
Parent pushback stems from what some view as a move by the Biden Administration to introduce critical race theory (CRT) and gender identity material in school districts across the nation.
Those moves have been met by parent outcry, increasingly manifesting itself in passionate pleas at school board meetings.
In response to growing criticism from parents, the National School Boards Association sent a letter to the Justice Department requesting that the sweeping powers associated with the Patriot Act be employed to discourage parents from expressing their views to school officials.
Notably, the letter requested the activation of the FBI to investigate outspoken parents for “domestic terrorism and hate crimes.”
At an embarrassing grilling before a Senate Committee, Attorney General Merrick Garland admitted that the activation of the FBI was without due consideration of the facts.
At that hearing, Senator Ted Cruz criticized Garland’s memo ordering the FBI to investigate parents. Cruz made a point of noting that despite scant evidence of violent acts against school board members or school officials, Garland’s opening line in the memo to the FBI reads: “In recent months, there has been a disturbing spike in harassment, intimidation, and threats of violence against school administrators, board members, teachers, and staff who participate in the vital work of running our nation’s public schools.”
PJ Media reports that a network of parent organizations sent a letter of protest to the NSBA, accusing them of trying to intimidate and silence the voice of concerned parents. The letter concluded with, “Have you no shame?”
An angry Thomas Massie (R-Kent.) tweeted: “Looks like Biden’s new war on terror is aimed at American citizens. Like the other wars, this one will never end.”
This prompted 13 Republicans of the House Judiciary to submit a letter announcing their intent to initiate a new investigation into the matter.
The letter alleges the Biden Administration colluded with the Justice Department and used the NSBA letter of complaint as a front to introduce intimidating policies and further a radical education agenda.
Becker News reports that America First Legal (AFL) is filing a lawsuit alleging collusion between the Biden Administration, Justice Department, and the NSBA.
AFL’s website notes that the group is “a national, nonprofit organization, working to promote the rule of law and prevent executive overreach….”
In their letter of complaint, the AFL states:
“Key Biden Administration stakeholders, including the National Education Association, the American Federation of Teachers, and others, have combined to oppress, threaten, and intimidate parents to chill and prevent them from exercising the rights or privileges secured by the Constitution.”
In particularly strong language, the AFL letter of complaint concluded:
“Accordingly, we request your Office investigate whether the Attorney General’s Memorandum was formulated and issued based on improper considerations. At this point, the dangers inherent in the undue politicization of the department’s criminal and civil law enforcement authorities, and in the corruption of the department’s standard order and process, should be evident.”
