A Texas state legislator announced on Monday that he will be introducing legislation to ban children from being subjected to drag shows after images from a bar inside Texas went viral over the weekend and sparked national outrage.
“The events of this past weekend were horrifying and show a disturbing trend in which perverted adults are obsessed with sexualizing young children,” State Rep. Bryan Slaton (R-TX) said in a statement. “As a father or two young children, I would never take my children to a drag show and I know Speaker Dade Phelan and the rest of my Republican colleagues wouldn’t either.”
Slaton’s remarks come after a gay bar in Dallas generated national outrage over the weekend for hosting a drag show for children “where kids were invited onstage and tipped performers in front of a neon sign bearing an obscene message,” The Daily Wire reported. “Outside the club, protesters gathered to complain that the event was grooming children.”
Slaton continued by noting that it was not enough for Texas Republicans to protect their own children and that it was their responsibility to put an end to the “sexualization that is happening across Texas.”
“I promised my voters that I would stand up for their values and fight to protect Texas kids,” he said. “I was re-elected on that promise and I intend to keep it by authoring legislation to defend kids from being subjected to drag shows and other inappropriate events. I look forward to working with my colleagues to pass this important legislation.”
Michigan gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon, a Republican, also responded to the event by saying that if she wins the election that she will sign legislation that criminalizes involving children in drag shows.
