Senate Democrats seem panicky about a free thinker like Elon Musk buying Twitter from reliable liberals like Jack Dorsey.
Monday, Twitter announced the board of directors reached an agreement with Musk to purchase the company by paying stockholders $54.20 a share. The world’s richest man will make Twitter a private company and delist it from the New York Stock Exchange. Musk has been a vocal critic of Twitter, saying the company should better align itself with the Constitution’s First Amendment.
News of Democratic lawmakers calling for hearings on Musk’s plans for the social media company were first reported by Bloomberg.
“We’re thinking about it,” responded Commerce Committee Chair Senator Maria Cantwell, D-Wa., to a question about whether the upper body planned to question Musk.
Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., who sits on the Commerce Committee, said it is important for senators to learn about the direction of comment moderation and potential censorship policies Musk envisions for his new company.
“It’s a technology which is central to democracy and our economy and it is important for the representatives of the American people to hear what the new owners intend on using that technology to accomplish,” Markey reportedly said. “We have to understand the censorship or lack thereof, content moderation or not, that is going to be the policy for the new owner.”
Democrat Richard Blumenthal, a senator from Connecticut, believes Musk should inform Congress and the public how he plans to address concerns expressed by Senate Democrats.
Republicans, on the other hand, do not seem the least bit concerned about Musk’s ownership of Twitter.
Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said Musk’s ownership will be “the biggest development for free speech in decades.”
“There is a reason why Big Tech liberals want to silence conservatives,” he stated, “they know that freedom and free enterprise wins!”
