A fan attending Saturday’s football game between Clemson and Georgia took a super-sized stand against kneeling when her large as life poster aired on ESPN’s College Gameday TV broadcast.
Most of the signs that got air time are the typical type of humorous pumping of a fan’s team or jab at the opponent’s team. Those signs said things like:
- Ted Lasso doesn’t BELIEVE in Clemson
- My Grandmother is tougher than the rest of Clemson’s schedule
- Choke: The official drink of the Georgia Bulldogs
- Clemson doesn’t need a vaccine. They ain’t gonna catch anything
None of those signs got as much attention and support, though, as the one that said, “Love you, Ryan,” beneath a photo of a uniformed Marine and — in large letters — Proud Marine Mom. The bottom of the poster added the hashtag “I don’t kneel.”
Last year, college football created controversy when teams decided to kneel before the start of games, in what they called a protest of racial and social injustice. The kneeling began after the death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer.
