Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin denied D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s request for National Guard help dealing with illegal aliens.
A Defense Department spokesman said deploying National Guard troops in the manner requested by Mayor Bowser would negatively impact force readiness, according to a Daily Caller report.
“The Secretary of Defense has declined to approve the DCHSEMA request for [D.C.’s National Guard] to provide personnel and the DC Armory to assist [the charity] SAMU First Response with transportation and reception of migrants arriving in the DC area,” a DoD spokesman said in a statement. “We have determined providing this support would negatively impact the readiness of the [D.C. National Guard] and have negative effects on the organization and members.”
The Democratic mayor of the nation’s Capital had asked for immediate federal assistance to the tune of 150 National Guard troops per day to help charities handle illegal aliens bussed to the city. Her request in a letter to the Defense Secretary claimed that 4,000 illegal aliens that Texas and Arizona had sent to D.C. had stretched her city’s relief ability.
Bowser claimed the capital was at a tipping point when it came to helping the illegals shipped to D.C.
She had also asked Austin requested use of Guard vehicles and fuel to transport illegals that Texas and Arizona bus to D.C. from their drop-off points to the D.C. Armory or Fort McNair. She wants them transported there and housed until arrangements can be made to move them to their final destination.
Governor Greg Abbott (R-Texas) has said he plans to continue sending illegal aliens awaiting asylum hearings to Democrat-controlled cities like Washington, D.C., and New York.
“In addition to Washington, D.C., New York City is the ideal destination for these migrants, who can receive the abundance of city services and housing that Mayor Eric Adams has boasted about within the sanctuary city,” said the Texas Republican governor. “I hope he follows through on his promise of welcoming all migrants with open arms so that our overrun and overwhelmed border towns can find relief.”
Border Patrol agents reported encounters with more than three million illegal aliens at the southern border since President Joe Biden’s inauguration, according to data from the Customs and Border Protection agency. The data details more than 200,000 illegal crossings were detected in each of the last four months.
More bus trips to share the pain of southern states with the Capital and the Big Apple are no doubt on the way, based on those numbers.
