Twitter can not be happy that 1.4 million users voted they believe the tech company does not believe in free speech.
Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk created a Twitter poll to judge fellow user’s thoughts on the matter.
“Free speech is essential to a functioning democracy,” Musk commented on his Twitter account. “Do you believe Twitter rigorously adheres to this principle?”
“The consequences of this poll will be important,” the Tesla founder stated. “Please vote carefully.”
There were 2,035,924 votes recorded for his Friday poll and the overwhelming majority — 70.4 percent — answered “No”.
“Waiting for Twitter to suspend your account to prove your point,” one user commented.
Florida Congressional candidate Lavern Spicer said, “There is no such thing as free speech on Silicon Valley social media.”
“Free speech has limitations, just like how you can’t yell fire in a movie theater, you can’t yell storm the capital on Twitter,” argued another commenter. “If free speech is not regulated on a platform where anyone can literally say anything without revealing their identity, soon you will have chaos.”
Another poster said, “Funny thing is the internet used to be ‘unregulated’ and everything was fine. Want regulated speech? I hear china is great this time of year.”
Hands down, the most-liked response to Musk’s poll came from Act For American founder Brigitte Gabriel. “Please buy Twitter,” she urged Musk. He plea has received 43,000 likes and been retweeted more than 2,100 times.
Iranian journalist Masih Alinejad came down hard on Twitter’s adherence to free speech ideals.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran’s officials banned 80 million people from Twitter but Twitter allowing them to enjoy ‘Freedom of speech’ on the same platform,” she said. “So, for many of us Iranians, this is not called freedom of speech. Twitter empowering our dictators to oppress us.”
Responses like Alinejad’s may prompt Musk to honor Gabriel’s request and buy the social media company. That would be a consequence of such a large ‘No’ vote.
