United States Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) made remarks about fellow Congresswoman Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) on Thanksgiving that some found objectionable.
In a video posted to Twitter, Boebert claimed a Capitol Building police officer ran frantically towards an elevator she had just entered with a staff member. Boebert said the guard appeared to be frantically trying to reach the elevator and stop the doors from closing.
Boebert can be heard saying in the video that she looked left and saw Rep. Omar. “And I said, ‘Well, she doesn’t have a backpack. We should be fine,’” Boebert said, although it is unclear if she said that aloud to Omar.
The Colorado Congresswoman considered that they only had one floor to go before they got out of the elevator and she debated whether her tongue should speak the words her mind was forming.
“Should I say it, or not?” she wondered, before continuing, “I looked over and I said, ‘Oh look, the jihad squad decided to show up for work today.’” Her Colorado audience laughed, whistled and applauded.
“Don’t worry, it’s just her staffers on Twitter that talk for her. She’s not tough in person,” she added.
Omar countered that the exchange never took place and, if anything, it is Boebert who looks down when she passes. “Anti-Muslim bigotry isn’t funny & shouldn’t be normalized,” opined Omar. “Congress can’t be a place where hateful and dangerous Muslims tropes get no condemnation.”
Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) called Boebert’s remarks “shameful, deeply offensive and dangerous.”
“These pathetic racist lies will not only endanger the life of @IlhanMN, but will increase hate crimes towards Muslims,” wrote Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.). “The continued silence & inaction towards this hate-filled colleague and others is enabling violence. It must stop.”
Illinois Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger tweeted, “Boebert is TRASH!”
Friday, the Colorado Congresswoman posted an apology to Omar on Twitter.
“I apologize to anyone in the Muslim community I offended with my comment about Rep. Omar,” Boebert wrote. “I have reached out to her office to speak with her directly.”
“There are plenty of policy differences to focus on without this unnecessary distraction,” she added.
