Elon Musk, the new owner and CEO of Twitter, received a humorous autogenerated email from the HR department of his own company — informing him he had 30 days to complete a “Managing @Twitter 101” course.
Musk posted the message to support his contention that the mammoth social media platform needs a reboot. Musk intends to increase efficiency and reduce redundancy. He complained, “There seem to be 10 people ‘managing’ for every one person coding.”
Some in the media, however, have painted Musk as a heartless beast who “plans to replace or eradicate the jobs of nearly 75% of Twitter’s staff.”
The new owner of Twitter has made some cuts at the upper management level — staff whose work appeared to oppose the free speech goals Musk wants his platform to pursue, but according to Bloomberg, Musk is not planning to cut 75% of Twitter’s staff, as many media outlets have reported.
According to Musk, the message he received illustrates the need for a review of Twitter’s management structure. Well known for his sense of humor, the CEO posted then mocked the message:
“M101 covers what it means to be a good manager at Twitter by showing you how to create opportunities for impact, help your Tweeps grow their careers, and demonstrate care for your team,” the message read.
But there’s a stick along with that carrot: “Psst… you’ve only got 30 days to finish this mandatory course,” the email continued. “And once you’re done, we’ll enroll you in Managing @Twitter 201.”
After posting the letter, Musk wrote:
“Just received this email from Twitter. This is an actual, real email that was autogenerated,” Musk tweeted on Sunday, along with a few ROFL emojis.
Musk added: “So demanding to allow a mere 30 days to learn this priceless information! But Management 201 is such a tantalizing carrot…”
The Western Journal noted that “in a reply thread, Musk was asked what the ‘most messed up’ thing at Twitter was.”
Musk noted that political bias and a top-heavy management structure are two issues he plans to tackle. He wrote:
CNBC has been one media outlet quick to cast Musk in a negative light. Recently, CNBC had to retract a story when they were duped into believing that Elon had terminated “the entire team of data engineers.”
Late last week CNBC reported on “a flurry” of activity outside of Twitter headquarters. The network interviewed two men carrying cardboard boxes who identified themselves as “Rahul Ligma” and “Daniel Johnson” and said they had been laid off.
CNBC correspondent Deidre Bosa quickly posted:
“It’s happening. Entire team of data engineers let go. These are two of them. #TwitterTakeover.”
However, the two men were pranksters — armed with fake names (“Ligma” is a fake internet disease), a copy of Michelle Obama’s autobiography and dubious lines such as “[I need to get home to] touch base with my husband and wife.”
Within hours of finalizing the acquisition of Twitter, Musk fired three key executives and pledged that Twitter was entering a new era and would overcome its reputation for censorship, bias and political discrimination.
Musk has promised, “more to come.”
