Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) is the face of righteous indignation when it comes to dealing with Dr. Anthony Fauci. The senator was among the first to challenge Fauci’s management of the pandemic and among the first to comment on Fauci’s Monday announcement that he will step down from his government roles in December.
Paul was pleased when he became aware of Fauci’s announcement but promised that Fauci would still be held accountable for his actions and will be called to testify before congress.
“Fauci’s resignation will not prevent a full-throated investigation into the origins of the pandemic,” Paul said in a Monday morning tweet. “He will be asked to testify under oath regarding any discussions he participated in concerning the lab leak.”
RTM previously reported on Fauci’s announcement, which noted his plan to step down as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and President Biden’s chief medical adviser in December of this year.
“I will be leaving these positions in December of this year to pursue the next chapter of my career,” Fauci said while emphasizing that he is “not retiring” and promising to use his knowledge to “advance science and public health.”
Paul asserts that Fauci’s actions were not just subpar but criminal and has threatened to investigate Fauci if the Republicans gain control of the House and Senate after the midterm elections in November.
“There will absolutely be consequences for the people who are flouting the law,” said Paul.
Fauci has appeared to be condescending and defiant during previous Q and A times before congress. In response to Paul’s threats to investigate, Fauci reportedly said, “Go ahead.”
In what many viewed as a false statement, Fauci reported during an interview on CNN that his “records are an open book.”
Fauci sought to discredit his detractors by saying: “They are talking about things that are really bizarre, like crimes against democracy by shutting down the government. All I have ever done — and go back and look at everything I’ve ever done — was to recommend common sense, good, CDC-recommended public health policies that have saved millions of lives. If you wanna investigate me for that, go ahead.”
Paul, who is also a physician, alleges that Fauci authorized gain-of-function research, attempted to silence dissenting views, knowingly advanced protocols without proper testing or safeguards and repeatedly lied about his work and the origins of the COVID pandemic.
An angry Paul said:
“I was told directly to my face, and the quote is there from Dr. Fauci, they had never ever funded gain-of-function research in Wuhan,” Paul told The Daily Wire as he left a congressional hearing in May 2021.
Paul was referring to Fauci’s claim that “the NIH has not ever and does not now fund gain-of-function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology.”
Therefore, Paul continued, as “all three witnesses contradicted that … I think that’s a big deal because the first hearing we have had where scientists who actually look at this information [and], as informed as he is, completely disagree with him and say that the research was gain-of-function and the NIH paid for it.”
