Prince Harry made a suggestion for repairing his damaged relationship with the royal family, which left the now-Queen Consort stunned, a new book alleges.
When Harry suggested the use of a “mediator” to pave over his differences with then-Prince Charles, Camilla Parker Bowles, the Duchess of Cornwall, responded by “spluttering” into her tea, according to an excerpt of “The New Royals: Queen Elizabeth’s Legacy and the Future of the Crown” published by Vanity Fair on Tuesday.
“She told Harry it was ridiculous and that they would sort it out between themselves,” said the Queen Consort, according to the book.
The title was authored by journalist Katie Nicholl, and cites unnamed royal insiders, who claim to be familiar with the inner workings of Buckingham Palace.
The meeting in question took place in spring of 2022, only weeks after a memorial service for Prince Philip, which Harry had been notably absent at. Charles was reportedly “somewhat bemused” at Harry’s suggestion, which would’ve involved a third party in the relatively public dispute between the royals.
Days after a meeting colored with “moments of tension,” Harry gave an NBC interview in which he expressed his desire to see his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II “protected” and surrounded by the right people. This prompted some frustration among some working royals, who interpreted the remarks as insulting to them.
The book also alleges that Harry’s older brother, Prince William, is the most alienated from the dissident royal, saying, “To this day, William still cannot forgive his brother,” Nicholl claimed.
The newest heir to the throne was reportedly “relieved” when Harry departed Britain and took the drama that seemed to follow him everywhere along with him.
“The New Royals” also cites palace sources who claim that the unity of the United Kingdom is a major concern for the new King. The United Kingdom, composed of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, could break up if the Scottish independence movement gains traction, as Charles is concerned about.
“His absolute preoccupation is keeping the union intact,” a close friend was quoted as saying of Charles’ priority in the book. “His view is that if he ends up being the King of England, then the kingdom would be diminished, and it would become a huge issue in terms of our global status.”
