A permanently installed, easy-to-read teleprompter is why White House aides prefer conducting presidential speeches in a replica Oval Office.
Administration handlers sacrifice the powerful Oval Office backdrop to showcase the aged president in a room with an easily-read teleprompter, according to a Politico report.
In an October 2021 tweet, Senator Josh Hawley’s, R-Mo., Press Secretary Abigail Marone outed the strange set constructed in the old Executive Office Building. “Why did the White House build a literal game show set complete with fake windows for Joe Biden?” Marone mused. “So weird.”
Tim Murtaugh, a communications director for former President Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign, also mercilessly mocked the fake office in a Twitter post.
“Has there been an explanation for why they built a fake White House set for Biden across the street from the real White House?” asked Murtaugh. “The other day there were shipping containers outside the window. Today it’s a winter wonderland. Just bizarre and phony.” Viewers who wondered why a bunch of shipping trailers were stacked on the White House lawn may now relax with understanding of the strange sight seen on TV.
Providing President Joe Biden with a comfortable setting to make speeches or interact with media members may hinder him on the campaign trail. The Biden campaign strategy of keeping their candidate basically quarantined in the basement of his Delaware home will not work with the pandemic’s waning. President Biden may have to face off against a combative competitor if Trump decides to run against Biden again in 2024.
There will be few places with permanent wide-screen teleprompters that may promote more extemporaneous remarks from the gaffe-prone president that make his handlers cringe.
Only time will tell if 2024 will be a Trump vs. Biden rematch for the Oval Office. It is at least clear why Biden holds publicity events in a fake White House set.
