Children of one Pennsylvania high school got an education that most people do not receive until they become adults.
About 1,200 students attend Hempfield High School nestled in Landisville, Pa., a hamlet of subdivisions surrounded by farms. Their parents were reportedly unaware their children’s school would host an event featuring “Drag Queens” dancing seductively.
An undeclared number of high school students and reportedly some middle school students attended the unusual April 25 after-school event at the school. The men, attired as women, danced for assembled students in what some observers have termed a “sexually suggestive” manner. The event, hosted by the school’s Gay Sexuality Alliance Club, was reportedly announced over school loudspeakers during the day.
According to a report in the Daily Wire, Kelly Tyson, co-adviser of the GSA Club, commented about the event and included photos of the performers. The teacher’s remarks indicate this was not the first performance of this kind at the school; it may have been the third.
“I don’t know how to express the sheer joy I feel in my bones when these queens come take (sic) time out of their busy schedules to perform for us (year 3!) and to be with my students,” remarked Tyson. “As GSA co-advisor and a queer teacher, it makes me emotional to think of this space we created.”
Tyson further shared, via the school’s learning management system, the online “handles” for the performers. “Here are the social media handles for our performers,” Tyson wrote. “Go follow and support them!!!” The Twitter account @LibsofTikTok posted a video allegedly showing some of the dancers performing for students that evening.
“A Pennsylvania teacher hosted a drag show event for students as part of the GSA club,” the group commented. “Parents were reportedly not notified. The district has confirmed this morning that the teacher is on leave.”
Hempfield High School has two principals, so it is unclear who may have authorized the event. If this was the third year the event was held, it could not have been a secret from administrators. School officials did not return a request for comment. They did issue a notice to the community on the school’s website.
“The Hempfield School District administration was made aware of a serious situation that took place at the high school on Monday, April 25, after school hours,” school offiicals said in a statement. ” Administration was notified of a concerning social media post and photo, and later videos, of a performance that occurred during an after-school event for GSA (Gay Sexuality Alliance) Club students. Immediately following the notification, an investigation into the incident began.”
In the statement, administrators apologize for the event, saying they were appalled at what took place and do not condone that kind of activity in the school.
“Neither the dress of the invited guests nor the performance was appropriate in our school setting,” they continued, adding the district is investigating the incident.
“Currently, an individual has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.”
