Rep. Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) received some backlash after she shared a screenshot of profile photos of the bipartisan group of Senators that negotiated the infrastructure bill.
In detail: The New York congresswoman on Wednesday shared a still image of an MSNBC report that showed the senators who tried to find common ground with lawmakers from the other side of the aisle in an effort to advance the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill.
Ocasio-Cortez criticized what she said what a lack of diversity in both groups of Senators that negotiated the deal.
“A lot of times, ‘bipartisan agreements’ are just as defined by who people in power agree to exclude than include,” the New York Democrat tweeted.
Critics accused Ocasio-Cortez of playing the race card.
Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) also slammed the mostly white bipartisan group of senators.
Bush posted the same image from the MSNBC report earlier in the day and wrote: “Is this the Bipartisan Infrastructure Group or the audience at a Kid Rock concert?”
She also added the hashtag “#NegotiationsSoWhite.”
Not a first: Ocasio-Cortez made similar remarks last month.
“The diversity of this ‘bipartisan coalition’ pretty perfectly conveys which communities get centered and which get left behind when leaders prioritize bipartisan dealmaking over inclusive lawmaking (which prioritizes delivering the most impact possible for the most people),” Ocasio-Cortez wrote in a tweet.
Ocasio-Cortez separately took aim at Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), who led the negotiations for the Democratic group over a recent statement on the reconciliation bill.
“Good luck tanking your own party’s investment on childcare, climate action, and infrastructure while presuming you’ll survive a 3 vote House margin – especially after choosing to exclude members of color from negotiations and calling that a ‘bipartisan accomplishment,’” Ocasio-Cortez wrote.
