Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) is struggling to win back support from Republican voters, according to recent polls conducted by two of her Republican challenges.
The story: The two polls, which were reported by the Washington Examiner, indicate that Cheney’s reputation among Republican voters has taken a serious hit, which can damage her chances at winning re-election in 2022.
The polling data showed that 77% of GOP voters would not back Cheney in her bid to keep her position in Congress. Only 23% of Republicans said they would vote for her. 53% of voters said Cheney was a liberal, and only 26% described her as a conservative.
In detail: The numbers came from polling data obtained by the pollsters of Wyoming House Rep. Chuck Gray and Cheyenne businessman Darin Smith. Both Gray and Smith are vying for Cheney’s seat, as well as former President Trump’s endorsement. The two recently met with the former president.
John McLaughlin, a pollster for Gray, found Gray and state Sen. Anthony Bouchard are the top two challengers to Cheney.
In a race with all the six current candidates who want to win the seat, 23% of voters chose Cheney, 17% picked Bouchard, and 7% said they would vote for Smith, according to McLaughlin’s poll. 30% said they were still undecided.
In an election featuring Cheney, Gray, and Smith, they received the support of 22%, 25%, 13.7% Republican voters respectively.
In a race between Cheney and Smith, however, Smith would beat her 54% to 22%. Gray would win a one-on-one election against Cheney 63% to 24%, according to the Examiner.
Numbers from Remington Research Group, which conducted polling for Smith, showed similar numbers in an election between him and Cheney.
Worth noting: Trump has an approval rating of 79% in Wyoming, according to McLaughlin.
“It is very clear that Wyoming voters are looking for solid, conservative Trump supporter Chuck Gray to defeat Liz Cheney for Congress. These voters want an active, aggressive and unified campaign for Trump supporter Chuck Gray to hold Liz Cheney accountable for her bad vote on impeachment and her current attacks on President Trump on the January 6th committee. They want to see Liz Cheney defeated next year,” he said.
How we got here: Cheney drew the ire of Republicans after she condemned Trump for claims of election fraud and voted to impeach him. In response, Republican lawmakers in the state voted to censure Cheney and she was later removed from her leadership position in the House.
Meanwhile, House Speaker Pelosi (D-CA) picked Cheney to serve on the select committee that investigates the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol.
In a recent statement, Trump called Cheney “deplorable” and described her as Pelosi’s “new lapdog.”
