President Joe Biden’s Justice Department has a black eye. Losing ground in the court of public opinion, the agency is currently fighting multiple accusations of impropriety, including political bias and staging photos tied to an investigation as well as falsifying information. The latest issue is a leak of information to the press regarding documents seized from former President Donald Trump’s home Mar-a-Lago.
The leak of information comes just days after U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon reprimanded the government for previous leaks connected to the Aug. 8 raid on Trump’s home.
The Washington Post ran with the information, no stating that Trump had “classified material” including detailed information on a “foreign government’s military defenses” and “top-secret U.S. operations.” The Post noted the leaked information came from “officials familiar with the criminal investigation.”
The latest leak appears to cast Trump in a negative light.
Cannon’s Monday ruling that the DOJ must halt its investigation until a special master could review material seized in the raid angered key players on the left. Many see the leaks as retribution.
In Monday’s ruling, Cannon chastised the Justice Department, writing:
“For the same reasons — chiefly, the risk that the Government’s filter review process will not adequately safeguard Plaintiff’s privileged and personal materials in terms of exposure to either the Investigative Team or the media — Plaintiff has sufficiently established irreparable injury.”
Jonathan Turley, Shapiro Chair of Public Interest Law at George Washington University, tweeted that the leaked information was potentially damaging to Trump, but the more serious issue is the steady stream of leaked information coming from the DOJ.
The Daily Wire noted that Cannon questioned the DOJ about leaked information, “which started immediately after the raid and included unsubstantiated claims Trump had nuclear secrets and a photo of documents spread out on the floor of Trump’s home.”
Cannon addressed this in her ruling, writing:
“When asked about the dissemination to the media of information relative to the contents of the seized records, Government’s counsel stated that he had no knowledge of any leaks stemming from his team but candidly acknowledged the unfortunate existence of leaks to the press.”
“The federal U.S. District Court Judge highlights FBI/DOJ failures to be forthright with court, failures to protect rights of Trump, leaks and other shady acts,” tweeted Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “If I were Biden gang, I’d look to drop this sham case ASAP.”
It is unclear where the documents came from — if they were declassified, if they were improperly seized and whether or not the documents are shielded by “executive privilege,” as Trump alleges.
Trump’s legal team is crying foul, claiming that the search was unwarranted and illegal and that his Fourth Amendment rights were abridged.
