Could former President Bill Clinton be the next prominent person facing trial from alleged victims of deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein?
The billionaire accused of sexually assaulting young girls died in his Metropolitan Correctional Center cell in August 2019 while awaiting trial.
After Epstein’s death under suspicious circumstances was determined to be suicide, federal prosecutors turned their sights to his girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell.
Prosecutors said at the time there was enough evidence that Maxwell arranged travel to Epstein’s house for some of his alleged victims who were below the age of consent. One of Epstein’s accusers was a 14-year-old at the time of their alleged sexual encounter.
Maxwell was convicted on December 29, 2021, on five of the six crimes she was charged with.
No sooner was the British socialite convicted than a member of Great Britain’s royal family started feeling the heat generated by the Epstein scandal.
Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, faces a civil lawsuit filed in a New York federal court by Virginia Roberts Giuffre. She claims she was sexually trafficked by Epstein, who forced her to have sex with friends. One of Epstein’s friends was Prince Andrew, whom she alleges was aware she was underage. She was 17-years-old at the time of the alleged sexual assault. The Duke of York has denied her allegations, saying he has no memory of ever meeting her.
If the case is not settled, the prince could face trial in New York City before December 2022.
District Court Judge Lewis Kaplan has turned away all legal maneuvers by the royal’s legal team that sought to dismiss the case. It is now headed to the discovery phase where both sides face questions under oath, in preparation for trial. The prince may settle the case, or continue the legal process that will see him face trial in a N.Y. courtroom or he could ignore the case. If he ignores it, he risks a summary judgement against him but current law does not require extradition for civil offenses.
News that the Daily Mail has linked Epstein to more than a dozen logged visits to the Clinton White House should worry the former president. His reputation is under a cloud because of the Monica Lewinsky scandal that ended with his Impeachment for perjury in that investigation.
The British newspaper investigation reveals Epstein was often accompanied by young women during his trips to the White House between 1993 and 1995.
