Vice President Kamala Harris told a Washington audience Tuesday that Republicans are weaponizing the law against women, asking “How dare they?”
“How dare they tell a woman what she can and cannot do with her own body?” Harris demanded during her speech at an EMILY’s List conference in the Omni Shoreham Hotel. “How dare they try to stop her from determining her own future? How dare they try to deny women their rights and their freedoms?”
It is not clear how Harris singled out Republicans for requiring women to give birth to babies when her administration forced millions of U.S. women to receive COVID-19 vaccines. The vice president did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Mike Pence, who was vice president during the Trump administration, did not wait for a White House spokesperson to clarify her remarks. He blasted her Thursday in remarks before an anti-abortion audience.
“I say, with the lives of 62 million unborn boys and girls ended in abortion since 1973, generations of mothers enduring heartbreaking and loss that can last a lifetime: Madame Vice President, how dare you?” Pence exclaimed at the Carolina Pregnancy Center’s annual gala in Spartanburg, S.C.
Sparring between the current vice president and her predecessor have been described as possible tune-ups for potential presidential bids by both in 2024. Given the abysmal poll numbers for Harris, though, it would be an unbelievable turn of events if she receives her party’s nomination for the presidency. Perhaps the vice president views the leaked Supreme Court draft of a ruling in an abortion case as a pivotal issue that she could try to hammer Pence with during a possible campaign run.
The vice president noted past work by EMILY’s List, which aims to elect women who support abortion rights before painting a picture of choices facing voters.
“Which party wants to expand our rights?” she asked. “And which party wants to restrict them? It has never been more clear.”
“You know, some Republican leaders, they want to take us back to a time before Roe v. Wade.”
Pence presented a different perspective during his Thursday remarks, according to a Daily Wire report.
“Make no mistake about it: Democrats and the radical Left will never stop pushing for more and extreme abortion-related policies as long as Roe is the law of the land,” Pence explained. “Democrat-run cities across America are now providing financial incentives for abortion, implementing paid leave.”
“In Boston, for example, government employees can receive 12 weeks of paid leave for abortion, the same benefit for having a baby.”
