Former first lady Melania Trump is pushing back at a recent report that claimed she did not think highly of late Republican Sen. John McCain’s military record.
The report, by Business Insider, referred to remarks that former President Donald Trump made about McCain back in 2015 during a GOP primary event in Iowa. He said that McCain was “not a war hero.”
“He’s not a war hero,” Trump said. “He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”
The outlet reported that it has spoken to Trump’s former campaign manager Cory Lewandowski about the matter and that he confirmed that the former president’s wife had the same opinion of McCain and his military service.
Lewandowski explained that Melania Trump made the comment when they met her in New York after Trump returned from Iowa.
“As we walked in the door, Mrs. Trump was waiting for us. She said: ‘You’re right. John McCain isn’t a war hero. What he has done for the veterans has been shameful,” Lewandowski told Business Insider.
At the time, Trump was facing mounting backlash for his remark and calls to apologize for what he had said about the late Senator.
Melania Trump’s response: The former first lady’s office described the Business Insider’s reports as “inaccurate.”
“Mrs. Trump respects and values all service men and women who have served and are currently serving our great Nation,” her office told the outlet.
Worth noting: Melania Trump expressed condolences when McCain died and thanked him for his service.
“Our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathy to the McCain Family. Thank you Senator McCain for your service to the nation,” she tweeted.
Meanwhile, Michael Cohen, who served as Trump’s attorney, told the publication that the former first lady was not reserved about her opinion in front of her husband. Trump’s statement did not address this claim directly.
