A carbon dioxide leak led officials at Los Angeles International Airport to evacuate and close a terminal on Monday morning,
A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department reported that four people became ill due to a carbon dioxide leak. One person is reportedly in “grave condition,” while the other three were in “mild distress.”
Terminal 8, a United Airlines terminal, was evacuated at about 8 a.m.
Fire dept. officials added that “no escalating or off-site hazard has been identified,” according to Fox News.
As of the posting of this article, no update on the condition of those who fell ill was available.
Airport officials report that passengers evacuated from Terminal 8 were directed to Terminal 7 for “screening” and that United flights that were to depart this morning and land at LAX were “being held at their origin airport as firefighters investigated the unspecified leak.”
At this time, it appears that Terminal 8 utilized by United Airlines is the only area impacted by the gas leak.
Fox News reported that the gas leak “appears to have … [resulted from] construction work” in the terminal area.
