House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy claims he knows who recorded his criticisms of former President Donald Trump in the aftermath of the January 6 Capitol riot.
Several months after The New York Times published a recording of McCarthy, dated Jan. 10, 2021, in which he said it was his “recommendation” that Trump “should resign,” McCarthy reveals that he knows who was behind the leaked audio and plans to reveal the culprit in the near future, according to Politico.
“I know who recorded me,” he said Thursday. “I’ll bring it forward. I have it.”
McCarthy initially claimed the Times reporting was “totally false and wrong” in a Twitter statement released hours before the outlet published the recordings.
“It comes as no surprise that the corporate media is obsessed with doing everything it can to further a liberal agenda,” the statement reads. “This promotional book tour is no different. If the reporters were interested in truth, why would they ask for comment after the book was printed?”
“The past year and a half have proven that our country was better off when President Trump was in the White House and rather than address the real issues facing Americans, the corporate media is more concerned with profiting from manufactured political intrigue from politically-motivated sources,” it continues.
“Our country has suffered enough under one-party Democrat rule and no amount of media ignorance and bias will stop Americans from delivering a clear message this fall that it is time for change,” McCarthy added.
It had been theorized that the leak stemmed from others in Republican leadership, with Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) blaming Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) in a tweet, but Cheney’s office was quick to deny they were the source of the leak, with a spokesperson telling Punchbowl News that Cheney “did not record or leak the tape and does not know how the reporters got it.”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer reportedly said McCarthy “sucks up” to Trump, during a private dinner with other prominent Democrats on Monday. Schumer also admitted that he believes Republicans will retake the House in the November midterms, saying that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is “in trouble.”
