James Smith, the husband of the only female New York Police Department officer killed in the September 11 terrorist attacks, expressed in an interview published by The U.S. Sun on Saturday that efforts to defund the police cast disrespect on the sacrifice made by his wife and other police officers.
The story: In an interview published on the 20th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, the widow of fallen hero Moira Smith, James “Jim” Smith, conveyed that people dishonor the sacrifice of his wife when they support the defunding of police.
“We made a promise to never forget and we’ve clearly forgotten with the way police officers are treated today in this country, both by the public and the politicians,” Mr. Smith said. “It’s disgusting. It didn’t take long to forget.”
“When this country needed their police officers, we were the first ones there,” he continued. “We were the first ones to run into the buildings to save people. Moira lost her life to make sure that other people got a chance to go home to their families, even though she didn’t get home to hers.”
Moira and Jim Smith both worked in the 13th precinct when the attacks occurred. Moira, who was working near the World Trade Center when the first plane hit, was the first person to report the terrorist attack.
After saving countless lives, Moira was on the third floor of the South Tower helping a person with asthma when the building collapsed and claimed her life.
“Cops are the ones who come in and save people,” Mr. Smith reminded. “They forgot the lessons of 9/11: there are people willing to give their lives to help you. It’s sad state of affairs.”
Worth noting: As commemorations to honor the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks played out on Saturday, Mr. Smith was adamant that he would not be associating with “anti-police” politicians seeking pictures “with their arms around heroes and trying to bask in the reflected glory of what my wife and other officers did.”
“By September 12, they’ll be back to defunding the police,” Mr. Smith said. “I’ve no intention of being anywhere near it.”
