House Republicans from Pennsylvania, led by Rep. Fred Keller, are demanding answers from Gov. Tom Wolf and Acting Secretary of Education Eric Hagarty, to why they have been receiving complaints of sexually graphic books being found in libraries for young students.
Keller’s office told the Daily Caller that they have been receiving messages from Pennsylvanians raising concerns about sexually graphic books found in Pennsylvania K-12 libraries.
Keller, along with four other republicans in the Pennsylvania delegation, sent a letter that was first obtained by the Daily Caller, to the governor and secretary of education asking them to explain why the books with explicit content are being allowed in schools throughout the state.
The letter specifically mentions the book “Gender Queer: A Memoir” written by Maia Kobabe. The book contains sexually explicit scenes, including scenes with exposed male genitals, an oral sex scene between two individuals and depictions of masturbation.
“America’s schools should be a place for students to learn and grow, not a breeding ground for the Left’s woke propaganda. After our team received tips from concerned Pennsylvania parents that K-12 school libraries were offering books on highly inappropriate and explicit sexual material, our team looked into the matter, and we were shocked by what we found. There is absolutely no reason why students should be exposed to such graphic material in an educational setting,” Keller said in an interview with the Daily Caller.
“Pennsylvanians want answers and we’re demanding the Governor and Pennsylvania Department of Education investigate this matter, determine how to fix this problem, and consult with local education authorities, concerned parents, and educators,” Keller continued.
READ THE LETTER:
The letter asks crucial questions, including:
- What processes are currently in place to review school library material?
- How do school boards, schools, and librarians engage with parents to determine age and academically appropriate content?
- What have the PDE and the Administration done to ensure the focus remains on academic outcomes and student success?
- Has there been any investigation into this matter?
“Gender Queer” is listed on Amazon as a book which, “started as a way to explain to [Kobabe’s] family what it means to be nonbinary and asexual, Gender Queer is more than a personal story: it is a useful and touching guide on gender identity—what it means and how to think about it—for advocates, friends, and humans everywhere.”
Notably, the book is listed for ages 18 and up.
