President Joe Biden’s southern border policies have been widely viewed as a failure. Key Republicans are reportedly responding by gearing up to impeach the Biden-appointed Homeland Security Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, for dereliction of duty.
During his first week in office, Biden reversed several effective policies his predecessor, Donald Trump, put in place. Biden’s executive orders, and ineffectual leadership from his “border czar,” Vice President Kamala Harris, have led to a border and humanitarian crisis.
Biden’s border policies made it possible for approximately two million illegal immigrants to cross the border with impunity in 2021. Border states report a “surge” in crime and drug activity.
According to The Wall Street Journal, border officials are bracing for a flood of migrants if enforcement of Title 42 provision ends. The Biden administration is pushing for the provision to be repealed, but a federal judge recently blocked the effort with a temporary injunction keeping Title 42 intact.
In response to Biden administration policies that threaten the safety of American citizens and circumvent the law, the Republican Study Committee, which represents more than 150 conservative members, is preparing to send a message to Biden by impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas, Axios reported on Monday.
Mayorkas is scheduled to testify before the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday. RTM previously reported that the committee demanded Mayorkas be prepared to respond to five areas of concern.
The Hill reports that the RSC and other GOP lawmakers began laying the foundation for impeachment even before Thursday’s hearing.
On Monday, RSC chairman Jim Banks sent a letter to Mayorkas accusing him of advancing unlawful and harmful immigration policies. The letter was signed by 133 House members, including Rep. Jim Banks of Indiana and Rep. Brian Babin of Texas.
The RSC letter states:
“Your actions have willingly endangered American citizens and undermined the rule of law and our nation’s sovereignty. Your failure to secure the border and enforce the laws passed by Congress raises grave questions about your suitability for office.”
The letter continues: “Current law requires you to maintain operational control of the southern border and detain illegal aliens. You continue to fail to do so. This raises significant questions about your commitment to securing our Homeland and the oath you took when taking office.”
House Minority Leader, Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., confirmed that he signed the letter and that impeaching Mayorkas was a possibility, according to a report in The Hill.
“This is his moment in time to do his job. But at any time if someone is derelict in their job, there is always the option of impeaching somebody,” McCarthy said during a news conference from Eagle Pass, Texas.
