Gilbert Gottfried’s final post on social media, before his death on Tuesday, was a show of support for his pal Chris Rock after the comedian was slapped at the 94th Academy Awards by actor Will Smith.
“Which is the worst crime?” the 67-year-old comedian tweeted on March 28 to his hundreds of thousands of followers after Smith walked on stage and struck the comedian in the face following Rock cracking a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head amid her hair loss battle.
“Chris Rock being physically assaulted or Chris Rock telling a joke?” he added.
Gottfried’s post included a picture of the two superstar comedians together. His post might have been the best description about the debate regarding the “Men In Black” star’s actions against the “Grown Ups” star at the annual awards show.
The very next post on the late comedian’s Twitter account was a heartbreaking message from his family sharing the news of his death on April 12.
“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Gilbert Gottfried after a long illness,” the message read. “In addition to being the most iconic voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend and father to his two young children. Although today is a sad day for all of us, please keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert’s honor. Love the Gottfried family.”
Following news of the “Beverly Hills Cop 2” star’s death, celebrities and fellow comedians shared tributes to the late star calling him one of the “all-time greats” and more.
Joe Rogan, podcast host: “Gilbert was a brilliant comedian, and a pleasure to be around. I feel very fortunate to have been able to spend time with him. Universally loved and respected by fellow stand ups. He was a rare and exceptional individual. He will be greatly missed.”
Jason Alexander, actor: “Gilbert Gottfried made me laugh at times when laughter did not come easily. What a gift. I did not know him well but I loved what he shared with me. My best wishes and sympathy to his family.”
Caleb Howe, Mediaite: “Oh wow. Gilbert Gottfried was one of the all-time greats.”
