In a rare showing of bipartisan support, Senators Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Dan Sullivan (R-AK) and 24 of their Republican colleagues, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), issued a joint statement in support of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s delegation stopping in Taiwan.
The Epoch Times reports the statement read:
“We support Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan. For decades, members of the United States Congress, including previous Speakers of the House, have traveled to Taiwan. This travel is consistent with the United States’ One China policy, to which we are committed. We are also committed now, more than ever, to all elements of the Taiwan Relations Act.”
The statement was signed by:
Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), John Thune (R-SD), Jim Inhofe (R-OK), Jim Risch (R-ID), Roy Blunt (R-MO), John Cornyn (R-TX), John Barrasso (R-WY), Ben Sasse (R-NE), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Thom Tillis (R-NC), Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Steve Daines (R-MT), Susan Collins (R-ME), Deb Fischer (R-NE), Todd Young (R-IN), Joni Ernst (R-IA), Rob Portman (R-OH), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Richard Burr (R-NC), John Boozman (R-AR), Tim Scott (R-SC), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), and Pat Toomey (R-PA).
Previously, RTM reported that Pelosi landed in Taiwan on Monday evening (Washington time) amid dangerously high regional tension. With no announced goals, many wonder why the delegation pressed so hard to make the stop — even against the publicly expressed opinion of their party’s president.
China considers Taiwan a breakaway province that must be brought back into its orbit of control and has threatened to use military force to ensure that happens.
Taiwan has proven itself a thriving and successful freedom-loving independent country since 1949. China desires its strategic location and economic assets — Taiwan is resistant to China’s designs.
The U.S. has pledged to support Taiwanese independence, but many question President Biden’s resolve in this matter.
