Greg Abbott, the Republican Governor of Texas, is ratcheting up the pressure on the Biden administration to address the border crisis that is burdening his state. Empathetic to the situation is Fox News, who ran a headline: “Illegal immigrants bring crime, death surge to rural Texas community.”
Frustrated that the administration offers no solutions, that the Border Czar Kamala Harris has not spoken to him once since taking office, and more policies (such as efforts to repeal Title 42) continue to be pushed by President Joe Biden, Governor Abbott began sending busloads of illegal immigrants to Washington, D.C.
After a few dozen busloads of immigrants were offloaded in D.C., it was hoped the administration would be spurred to positive action. No such luck — the phrase “drastic times call for drastic measures” is now whispered in Texas strategy sessions.
In a move designed to relieve the burden Biden administration policies have placed on local communities in his state, Abbott is now considering flooding Washington, D.C., with hundreds of buses of immigrants.
His thoughts are profiled in this press conference video.
Governor Abbott warned: “We’re up to our 45th bus now; when you add a zero to that I think that Washington, D.C., is going to soon find out they’re going to be dealing with the same consequences we’re dealing with.”
“One thing we know for a fact is that there are maybe as many as 100,000 migrants who are across the border waiting to cross into Texas,” Abbott noted. “The Biden administration seems to be letting in people whether they’re crossing through the port of entry or across the river.”
Abbott argues that the drug cartels on the other side of the border want illegals to cross the river instead of entering through recognized ports of entry because that keeps the border patrol preoccupied and unable to focus on the cartels and their transports.
The Governor also notes that the problem of illegal immigration is not limited to Texas:
Right now, Texas has the largest number of people crossing the border. One thing we have found with the implementation of Operation Lonestar is it has shifted cartel activity to New Mexico to Arizona, to California. … With every day that Texas has success, it may mean failure for some other state. That means failure for the United States of America.
[We need] a president who is willing to step up and enforce the rule of law. Remember this: It was only a year and a half ago that we had the lowest amount of illegal immigration in decades. And then it only took a year and a half of the current administration to lead to the highest illegal immigration ever.
When asked about the line of communication with the administration, Abbott noted that neither President Biden nor Vice President Kamala Harris had contacted him or his office:
“My last contact with [Homeland Security] Secretary Mayorkas was something like in February a year ago,” Abbott said. “They have no interest in talking to Texas or talking to leaders who are actually on the border.”
“Remember Joe Biden himself has never even been to the border. We are dealing with a crisis that is man-made by President Biden, who doesn’t want to take the time to even come to the border or talk to the governor of a border state,” Abbott concluded.
