Inflation, energy, supply chain issues and — oh, yeah — Ukraine apparently take a back seat to a January 2021 Kevin McCarthy conversation.
Headlines abound about a Republican colleague defending remarks the House minority leader made regarding a hypothetical Trump Senate impeachment conviction. Last year, McCarthy questioned whether to recommend a Trump resignation in a leaked conversation with fellow House Republicans. The Senate declined to convict former President Donald Trump for allegedly inciting rioters to attack the U.S. Capitol January 6, 2021, — making the matter moot.
No leaked audio has yet surfaced to indicate if Rep. McCarthy speculated courses of actions if an asteroid seemed likely to strike Earth.
Representative Michael McCaul (R-Texas) stuck up for his Republican colleague from California on this week’s broadcast of “Fox News Sunday.” Rep. McCaul basically called audio of McCarthy speculating his advice for Trump to resign if impeached and convicted a nothingburger.
“Absolutely. I think Kevin is in very good shape,” responded McCaul to a question about McCarthy’s ability to continue leading House Republicans.
“In fact, the president came out saying this is not going to endanger his relationship with Kevin, that he is strongly supportive,” McCaul said, adding “you have to put it in the context of when it was given.”
“This was literally right after Jan. 6,” the Texas Republican continued. “It was a very dark day and a very shocking day. A lot of emotions flying high.” He added that the head House Republican was just gaming out various options. One option considered was if Trump had been convicted by the Senate would it be better for him to resign.
McCaul declared McCarthy never had that conversation with the former president.
“President Trump said yesterday that he fully supports Kevin McCarthy for speaker, as do I,” stated McCaul.
“Kevin has put one goal, and one goal only, in his mind: taking back the majority.”
