Shana Chappelle, the mother of one of the 13 U.S. service members killed in the terrorist attack on Kabul airport last month, invited former President Donald Trump to her son’s funeral in a Facebook post, saying “[i]t would be such an honor to meet the real President of the United States of America.”
The story: Chappelle, Gold Star mother of 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Kareem Nikoui, wrote on Facebook last week, “I would love if somehow my President ( you Mr. Trump) could be present as i lay my Beautiful baby boy Lance Cpl. Kareem Nikoui to rest.”
“It would be such an honor to meet the real President of the United States of America, President Trump,” she continued. “I love you and America loves you.”
Trump then acknowledged Chappelle in a statement posted to his website.
“Thank you Shana — our Country loves you and especially loves your beautiful boy, Kareem,” Trump stated.
How we got here: This is not the first time Trump has addressed Chappelle, who has been very vocal in her anger toward the Biden administration for their handling of the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.
In a series of social media posts, one of which led to the suspension of her Instagram account, Chappelle blamed Biden for her son’s death.
On August 30, she posted: “Since IG has disabled my account, i am sure Facebook will be deleting my account also! Isn’t that cute how the blood of my son is on Biden’s hands and they choose to silence me?”
In another post, she wrote, “If my president Trump was in his rightful seat then my son and the other Heroes would still be alive!!!!”
That post prompted this response from Trump: “Shana, you are 100% correct. If I were President, your wonderful and beautiful son Kareem would be with you now, and so would the sons and daughters of others, including all of those who died in the vicious Kabul airport attack. Civilians should have been brought out first, along with our $85 billion of equipment, with the Military coming out very safely after all was clear. I love you, and I love Kareem.”
Trump has yet to confirm whether or not he will attend the funeral of Kareem Nikoui.
