Former UFC Champion Cain Velasquez speaks out after his arrest in early March. Velasquez faces 10 charges, including shooting one man and attempting to murder another.
According to the Santa Clara, California, District Attorney’s Office, the shooting occurred during an “11-mile, high-speed chase through busy streets into San Jose.”
Those familiar with the case note that Velasquez was pursuing Harry Goularte, whom Velasquez believes molested a “close family member.”
Velasquez recently released a statement on the incident:
“From the bottom of our hearts and the depths of our souls, we are forever grateful for your love. Your selfless gestures and kind words have given me strength in my darkest times. This story is complex and slowly unraveling as we speak,” Velasquez wrote.
Velasquez continued:
Many can empathize with the powerful emotions Velasquez was experiencing at the time of the incident. Santa Clara District Attorney Jeff Rosen’s assessment, however, was not sympathetic:
“…Mr. Velasquez chose to take the law into his own hands, endangering the public and everyone in the truck. This act of violence also causes more pain and suffering to his family.”
The Daily Caller includes in their report the fact that Goularte was arrested and charged with molesting a child just days before his encounter with Velasquez.
According to court documents, Velasquez faces ten charges. They include shooting at an occupied motor vehicle, three counts of assault with a firearm, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, willfully discharging a firearm from a vehicle, and carrying a loaded firearm with intent to commit a felony.
