A 36-year-old University of Michigan assistant football coach collapsed during a match against the Indiana team he previously coached.
Running backs coach Mike Hart fell to the ground during the first half of the Saturday game played at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Indiana, and was taken away for medical evaluation.
Hart gave two thumbs up as he was taken out on a cart, according to a report in The Daily Wire. He reportedly suffered a seizure just after a Hoosier touchdown that tied the score 7-7.
Players from both Big Ten teams kneeled as Hart was removed from the field. Reporters noted an emotional scene on the sideline afterwards.
“Hugs on the @UMichFootball sideline after RB coach Mike Hart was carted off the field,” FOX College Football reported.
The New York native was a Michigan running back from 2004-2007, amassing greater than 5,000 yards and 41 rushing touchdowns in his college career. Hart was drafted by the National Football League’s Indianapolis Colts in the 2008 draft. He retired from the NFL two years later.
This was the first game the second-year coach faced his old team, according to CBS Sports.
Hart, who is in his second year of coaching for the Wolverines, had previously coached with the Hoosiers where he worked from 2017-2020. According to CBS Sports, this was the first game for Hart to face his old team in Indiana.
The air seemed to go out of the Wolverines team after the coach suffered his seizure and they entered the locker room at the half, tied 10-10.
According to Fox reporter Jenny Taft, Hart contacted the team to let them know he was “doing OK.”
The Wolverines promised to win the game for their coach after Hart addressed them in the locker room at the half, and they kept their word.
Michigan defeated Indiana 31-10.
